Self determination. The holy grail…..

I watched a great video from an expert in the health and fitness field and he describes the behavioural journey from just starting out in fitness to becoming someone who the government doesn’t need to worry about. How is this achieved? Check out the video.

That last part about the government ‘not worrying’ are my words. The boom in the health and fitness industry is partly because the government are seriously worried. They are quite happy to see lots of new people out there getting qualified then trying to help the vast majority of our population who are on a fast track to ill health and quite frankly, a massive and probably unsustainable tax on the system. The cost of preventable disease is huge and the government want people to act now and prevent a future that could send them broke. I don’t think they are actually worried about the people suffering mind you, it is, as usual all about the money. Now we can sit around and debate or moan about them not caring and why don’t they help us etc? But the best thing we can all do is aim to look after ourselves as best we can.

I am going to make a bold statement here: “If you are not in the habit of exercising regularly as part of your life, including cardiovascular, strength, balance, core and coordination training you are, at best headed for a very unexceptional and low quality life or at worst, chronic illness and early death. These are the facts. What are you going to do about it?

The long term answer lies in ‘self determination’. This term describes the state in which a person gets when they have finally taken on the responsibility and are prepared to do the work that would see them heading towards a healthier more enjoyable life. The video I mentioned earlier discusses the importance of ‘engaging’ with the process of doing what it takes. He talks about the lure of making yourself ‘younger’ with exercise and nutrition. The bioage puts numbers to the consequences of doing or not doing. The link is real. The test is a great way to put meaning in to your training. Give us a call if you or someone you know wants to know where you (or they) are at and more importantly what can be done to change a bad situation.

Use it or lose it…..

Maybe some of us have kind of dabbled in health and fitness. You know ‘The Amazing Watermelon Diet of the Stars’ in the weekly mag, or ‘Pilates is the answer to that flat belly you’ve always dreamt of’ on the prime time ‘health show’ or perhaps it was ‘Go hard or go home’ flyer of the ubiquitous 6 week challenge at the local gym that hooked you in, albeit until it got too hard or just finished.

Your Lifestyle Has Consequences

Your Lifestyle Has Consequences

Have you ever heard the saying, ‘that you become what you think about all day long’? The same also applies to exercise, ‘you become what you do or don’t do on a regular basis’. Hence the headline today. The trick with this ‘consistent exercise gig’ we all know we need is to find your motivation. If you can achieve that, you will no longer need ‘will power’, as the reason for doing it drives the action on auto pilot.
